Advances in Diabetes Research and Management

Abstract

Increased blood sugar brought on by inadequate insulin synthesis or activity is known as diabetes mellitus (DM), resulting in disrupted carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism. Diabetes prevalence was reportedly expected to be 171 million (2.8%) in 2000 and might climb to 366 million (4.4%) by 2030. It is crucial to understand that DM is a wide term that refers to disorders that cause chronic hyperglycemia. The differences in the processes that cause the various kinds of diabetes serve as the foundation for their classification. Type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes are the most common types of diabetes. Diabetes type 1 is a chronic illness in which the pancreas produces very little or no insulin. Insulin is a hormone that must be present for glucose, or sugar, to enter cells and turn into energy. Whereas, fat liver and muscle cells become insulin-resistant in type 2 diabetes. Numerous biochemical assays are used to identify the type of diabetes and its severity to some extent. There has been some recent methodology that has also proven to be successful in determining the stages of diabetes. Some instruments are also available for the patient to measure their blood glucose/sugar (BS) level by sitting at home. These new trends and advancements have helped and are helping in the assaying of diabetes much faster and as well as less painful.
